The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic performs a wide range of work involving installing and recognizing the cause of faulty refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and makes repairs on large systems that provide a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning, filtering, and circulating. Calculates airflow and the pressure-temperature characteristics for different systems; Recognizes the cause of faulty equipment swiftly in order to reduce inoperative time to a minimum; Locates trouble before dismantling and makes repairs which insure proper functioning after assembly; Performs complex repairs such as installing and fitting connecting rods, crank shafts, piston rings, bearings and bushings; Overhauls valves by adjusting or replacing gaskets, springs, floats, diaphragms, valve fittings, seals, and couplings; Aligns motors and flywheel drives; Checks out the refrigeration cycle of a variety of commercial and industrial systems to locate and check elements such as those that control low side and high side pressure, temperature of cooling units, and running time of various mechanisms; Examines equipment components visually and audibly for the probability of leaks and performs prescribed test procedures and explores probable reasons for equipment failure; Analyzes the numerous parameters to determine a course of action needed to manipulate the electronic controls to resolve the problem; Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule:

Work Requires light to moderately heavy physical effort (20-75 lbs.) while lifting, transporting carrying, pulling, steadying, moving, handling or setting-up parts, unit parts, tools, equipment, etc. Adjustments, installations, repairs, tests and replacement of parts, system/sub-systems, and assemblies requiring knelling, crouching, stooping, bending, climbing and standing for long periods. Work from ladders, scaffolds, atop elevator cars, platforms, ground level, trenches, manholes or hard-to reach places requiring climbing ladders, reaching over, under and into equipment while in cramped, awkward, tiring and/or uncomfortable positions. Use hand, eye, leg and body coordination while installing, repairing or testing electrical equipment in confined spaces. Exerts moderately heavy physical effort, some work may be performed while seated. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
This position requires EPA certification in order to handle and remove CFCs. If you do not possess this certification, you will not qualify for this position. You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
